Superhero Bats: The Amazing World of Bats and Their Superpowers!
with Kristen Lear
I got my start in bat conservation in 6th grade when I built and put up bat houses for my Girl Scout Silver Award project. Since then, I’ve spent my life studying these amazing animals and how to protect them and leading hundreds of public bat educational events and activities. I’ve worked with bats around the world and earned my PhD in bat conservation and am passionate about sharing my passion for bats with others! I especially love connecting with kids to inspire their curiosity and interest in the natural world!

We all know about Batman and Batwoman, but do you know about the REAL superhero bats? Come learn about the amazing world of bats and their superpowers with bat conservation scientist Dr. Kristen Lear! Through a presentation full of cool photos and videos, we’ll learn about the HUGE diversity of bats around the world (did you know that there are over 1400 species of bats!), ranging from orange bats to bats that look like badgers to bats that have mohawks, even bats that look like Yoda! We’ll also learn about their superpowers like echolocation, insect pest control, pollination, seed dispersal, and more!
Armed with your new knowledge, you’ll then come up with and draw your own superhero bat with its own superpower to share with the rest of the group!
- Paper for drawing
- Drawing and coloring utensils (pencils, pens, crayons, markers, etc.)
- Feel free to get creative when creating your own bat! In addition to drawing materials, you can bring items to glue onto your bat too (like feathers, felt, cut paper)!
